Dan Gustafson

Prior to his recent appointment as Senior Vice President for Government Affairs, at Scofes & Associates Consulting, Dan Gustafson was the President and CEO of the Health Care Association of Michigan. An association of highly regulated long term care providers who rely on government appropriations for over 80% of their revenue, Dan's tenure greatly enhanced their political status as they faced aggressive government regulatory policies and successfully fought off numerous proposed budget cuts.

Drawing on years of political experience as a former legislator in the Michigan House of Representatives, Governor John Engler called upon Dan's integrity and management skills when he appointed him to serve first as the Chairman of the Michigan Liquor Control Commission, and then as Executive Director of the Michigan Gaming Control Board. Both regulatory agencies required the interpretation and implementation of the controlling legislative acts and their corresponding administrative rules. Dan guided these agencies with the understanding that the state was a partner with their customers and worked to find solutions to problems facing industry players.

As a member of the Legislature, Dan's peers recognized his leadership abilities in electing him to the leadership position of minority floor leader. Dan developed an expertise in regulatory law by serving as Vice Chair of the Public Utilities Committee where he was instrumental in shaping telecommunications and electric utility legislation. As a member of the House Appropriations Committee, Mr. Gustafson oversaw the budget of the Department of Consumer and Industry Services, home of the states leading regulatory agencies. Dan was highly recognized for his ability to successfully reach beyond partisan boundaries to achieve balance policy objectives.

Chief of Staff to Lt. Governor Dick Posthumus, years of service on both House and Senate staff, and a system administrator for Cadillac Motor Car, round out Mr. Gustafson's work experience.

A Master Degree in Business Administration, from George Washington University in Washington, D.C., with a concentration in business, economics and public policy provide a strong academic background to support Dan's extensive work background.
